Yes, it is specifically designed to allow you to clamp the block in a vice and torque the barrel nut. The plastic is UHMW HDPE - Ultra High Molecular Weight High Density Polypropelene. It's tough stuff.

We made it fit tight in the upper, so it holds it securely and prevents damage or deformation of the upper.
