Some people prefer a single point tactical sling over the two-point sling and some people prefer to shoot from the prone position over, say, the kneeling position. There are four basic shooting positions that the proficient marksman will learn. All four of these positions have their own place when you are out in the field. Weather conditions as well as terrain will ultimately dictate which position you will use during a specific situation. Since shot opportunities will no doubt arise without warning, as a shooter, you will need to assume a position as soon as possible.

In the prone position, the shooter lays flat on the stomach. This position is the most comfortable and the most steadiest. But, it is also the most difficult position to assume, especially when time is of the essence. If the game you are hunting is un-alerted to your presence, this is the recommended position to take.

The sitting position is a stable position and it is fairly easy to assume. This position will also give you sight above grasses and low brush. The sitting position is ideal when your terrain won’t allow for the prone position, or if grass and shrubbery are in the line of fire.

The kneeling position is best when time is short as it can be quickly assumed. This position gives you more accuracy than standing and aids in helping you focus on the shot.

The standing position is the least accurate and least stable of the positions. However, there will be situations when you just don’t have the time to get into the other positions. Also, this position allows you to see over tall bushes and grass.

Before you go out and hunt for your trophy game, learn all these shooting positions and you will no doubt be more successful.
